Other News:
Zimbabwean
Music Festival, July 27-29, 2001 Seaside , Cal.
Three days
was just not long enough to experience all the dimensions of this fantastic
event! My body is still moving to the rhythms of the marimba bands,
and my spirit was moved again by the soul of the mbira ensembles.
Zimfest
2001 brought together over 12 performing artists from
Zimbabwe , teachers from
all over North America and the
UK , and a wonderful assemblage
of dedicated, enthusiastic players, dancers and singers. This was my
1st Zimfest and I felt so welcomed! Even though I’ve had a connection
to, and love of the mbira for over 20 years, this was my first real
opportunity to learn more specifically about the mbira, its
history and spiritual significance, and to learn traditional songs and
playing techniques. I took workshops in 3 different kinds of mbira,
nyunga-nyunga, matepe, and dza va dzimu. Of course there were all kinds
of other workshops in both the Shona and Ndebele cultures, marimba,
mallet technique, singing, dancing, and hosho (gourd rattles). Some
highlights for me were: Russ Landers playing the mouthbow, chipendani,
Forward Kwenda’s Sat. night transcendant playing of (the spirits were
there, full house!!), volunteering, dancing freely, and all the wonderful
people that make up this community!! Thank-you’s to everyone involved
in organizing it, making it happen, doing stage and sound, making a
beautiful festival guide, the marketplace, teaching, performing, and
just being there.
I’m looking
forward to Zimfest 2002 in Seattle
, July 12-14,
2002 . Please spread the word and the music and the spirit
of Zimbabwean culture worldwide.
